The Scrap Squad is a small, select group of Quiltmaker readers who make scrappy versions of one quilt from each regular issue. They’re a talented bunch. For the new Sept/Oct issue, we chose a design called Western Waltz for the Scrap Squad project. Here is the original quilt seen on page 62 of the issue.
Western Waltz was designed and made by Donna Benham from Omaha, Nebraska.

Sewing for Christmas during the heat of July can be tricky.
Until…
I saw this fabric called “All A Glow Wavy Stripe” by Susan Winget.
The only thing that was missing from this quilt was spare time….
…so I hit the ground running and wished I had GPS in my tractor so I could sew like this lady. (Thanks, Anne Wiens…you put a bug in my head!!)
I knew I wanted to put the stripes into the points of the stars.
And what goes better with stripes than Christmas candies?
It was turning into something I was really starting to like….
The puzzle was quickly coming together.
I mixed and matched some reds to create three borders.
And in a record two days,
this quilt was off to my favorite longarmer, Terry Whitman.
My apologies to Terry, because I know my set-in triangles and borders had some stretch in them.
I asked her if she used a lot of bad words and she quickly replied YES!
We have been BFFs for 23 years. And I think we still are.
Terry worked her feathering and “McTavishing” all over this quilt.
She highlighted each block in its own glory.
The back is a work of art in its own right.
And of course I bound it with Suzie’s Magic Binding technique, which I learned from fellow Scrap Squad member Marti Dyer-Allison’s blog.
I don’t think I will ever get tired of doing binding like this!!
Happy Scrapping…. Christa

This may be one of the best Scrap Squad quilts ever! Between the gorgeous Christmas colors and the stellar quilting, it’s a real winner. Wonderful work, Christa!
